Here are the east side pens on May 14, after full six days of work. Five of the doors are finished and mounted, and four pieces of chicken wire are up. There are 3 more doors to hang and lots more chicken wire to stretch and staple. |
The doors took quite a bit of time because we went to the trouble of "lapping" the 2x4 boards for added strength. |
The door opening was measured first, the vertical and harizontal boards were then cut to length to provide 1/4 inch of clearance all around. |
They were measured, marked and cut at the top, middle and bottom with a "dado blade set" on a table saw so they fit together like "Legos". |
After dado cutting, the lumber was then glued with Elmer's Exterior Grade Carpenter's Wood Glue and screwed as shown with five 1 1/4" power drive screws. |
The next step is being made considerably easier with two electric staple guns, although it is still very time consuming. The Swingline model is shown here and we also have an Arrow. They use common T-50 staples. We used the 3/8 inch long staples for the chicken wire because both staple guns had trouble driving the 1/2 inch size far enough into the lumber. I hope Santa brings a pneumatic stapler next Christmas to go with the 5HP compressor he brought this past year. |
