QUESTION:
I'm asking this one for a friend.
She has 2 young turkeys that had cheeks kind of swelled along beak area,
below eyes. One has now died. Does anyone know what this is
& treatment. They free range with chickens & guineas.
Thanks.
Another symptom of this is all around eye
swelling and in advanced cases, cheesy deposits in the eye.
ANSWER:
We lost one of our tom turkeys (Beavis)
to this. We had him at the vet twice for it ($50 a visit!!) and he still
died. The vet prescribed Terramycin eye ointment. I would go further and
give antibiotic injections next time. I don't know why the vet didn't
except that he usually treated parrots...
We cured a whole flock (lost a few though...)
of bantam chickens of this problem with under wing injections of 1 cc penicillin.
The dosage for turkey would be the question?? I honestly think that's
why the vet didn't give the injections. Soluble Terramycin in the
water at the same time would probably be advisable as well.
Soluble Terramycin in the water alone may
do the trick if you catch it early enough.
Good Luck,
Pete
