Backyard Goldfish Pond - Page 1
Barn

I dug this Goldfish pond in the back yard in about 1990.  I framed the inside with welded wire and cemented it, then painted it with pool sealer and sky blue pool paint.  The rear half is one foot deep and the front half is two feet deep.  Believe it or not it used to be absolutely crystal clear with dozens of goldfish, koi, water lillies and other plants, two waterfalls and a fountain in the middle (see 1998 photo at bottom of page).  Once Justines ducks and geese found it, it went to heck in a handbasket in a hurry.  Thick green slimey algae.  Now that we have the backyard fenced and the waterfowl stay on the neighbor's stock pond, we will probably clean it up this year and see if we can't make it pretty again.  I have some "film" photos of it when it was a showpiece, and will get them scanned and posted as soon as we get our new scanner installed and find some more time.  It's located on the west end of the back yard and we just (April 20, 2002) planted the junipers on either side of it.  The top 4 photos were taken on April 20, 2002 and the bottom 8 photos were taken on July 20, 2002.

In late May, 2002, we cleaned the pond out and planted some water plants that friends donated to our cause after seeing the first 4 pics on this page.  They have since thrived in the pond and we have a large number of frogs who call it home.  There are about a dozen goldfish in there, but they wouldn't come to the top for a photo opportunity and the algae is keeping the water green, but at least it's not thick and slimey.

The photo at left was taked in 1998, right after the pond was cleaned, scrubbed and freshly painted with waterproof sky-blue swimming pool paint. As of mid-July, 2003 the water lilies have spread dramatically and Justine counted nine flowers in the pond.
