Homer Pigeons
The nest boxes in our Pigeon "loft". They measure 12"x10"x10" with disposable nest bowls made of paper mache. |
The trap door of our Pigeon "loft". They come and go during the day and we shut this at night. |
Keeping the eggs warm. Both parents take turns sitting on the nest. Usually the hen sets during the day, and the cock sets the nest at night. |
Pigeons are great parents. They'll try to discourage a predator by swatting at them with their wings. |
We made our pigeon perches of plywood and placed them all around the loft walls. |
Hen #36 - This bird was killed by a red-tailed hawk who entered the loft one week after this photo was taken. She was setting on eggs at the time. |
When pigeons first hatch, they're just a little bigger than a quarter and little more than yellow fuzz with a big beak. This plump pair is about 3 weeks old. |
This 2 week old "squeaker" is getting a little excited wanting to be fed! |

| Our pigeons
are from racing stock, but we don't have time to train them or race them.
We just love to watch them fly and raise families. A flock, or "kit" of
pigeons flying together in unison is a beautiful thing to see.
