Our white guinea pen in the new barn |
Guineas
are great around any farm or ranch. They eat bugs like they were
caviar and especially like ticks, beetles and grasshoppers. We used
to have a horrible fire ant problem, but since we turned loose our flock
of "attack" guineas, we seldom see an ant mound. Guineas don't scratch
the ground, so they won't tear up a garden like chickens will. They
just eat the bugs! They make great watch-dogs as well, and will keep
snakes away!
The male guinea is called a cock and the female is a hen. The male has a somewhat larger "helmet" and "wattles" and makes a one syllable call similar to: "Kee-Kee-Kee", while the hen's call is two syllable and sounds like "Buck-Wheat, Buck-Wheat". The hen can also imitate the male sound, but only hens make the two syllable sound. |
Two male white guineas |
The feathers on a guinea's neck kinda look like they're trying to grow to it's head, but can't quite get there. |
Guinea chicks are called "keets". While baby white chickens are born yellow, white Guinea keets are not! |
They're born pure white and sometimes, but not always, have a small black dot or line on the top of their head. This one must have been playing hooky when they handed out the dots. |
